Artist: Dreamend
Venue: Wormhole, Savannah, GA
Date: 3/10/11
Before he actually went on, Ryan talked to me and a few others beforehand about general life topics, and he touched on my current city of residence, Savannah. While Savannah is pretty great, it lacks its own real cultural scene, especially with music. No real music venues, no real bands. But he made the point that in a situation like that, it's up to the people of the city to help mold the shape of things to come. I sort of shrug it off as typical Ryan wisdom at the time.
As is typical with the Wormhole, the crowd is pretty underwhelming. few obvious fans, and mostly innocent bystanders as it were. A projection unit plays a variety of images in the background, ranging from footage from a car of a typical highway, to footage of the movie Häxan. The set seemed rather short, but I tried to spring a quick leak in between songs before my bladder exploded. Of course, as I'm in the bathroom, I hear the beginning of "Can't Take You", one of my personal favorites. I rush out as soon as I can, rejoicing in this glory. After that, they play "Are You Waking", ANOTHER one of my favorites.
In that moment, I realize and understand Ryan's thought process...at least in terms of Savannah. I know it will take the citizens of this town to change the culture. I want to be part of that. I want to better this city. I know, I have to move on with my life and go to better places, but it sucks. If Savannah offered any real opportunities for my fiancee or I, maybe we'd stay. But. Eh.
But in that moment, I realized how much it pained me to leave here in the future. I would love to help this city, but I know I have other callings. Hopefully I can help spread the Graveface gospel in Louisville.
Eh. I can't wait to see Dreamend again Saturday night. I don't give a fuck if they could play the same exact set. I want to be there. While I executed for once in my life a slight degree of subtlety, the performance tonight was moving unlike anything else I have ever seen. I thank Ryan and John (?) the Drummer for giving me an experience like no other, and I hope to relive it shortly.
Other notes:
- They played 'The Face on the Tintype' from the new album!!!
- I met fellow board member ultravioletsmile and her husband. They were both great people and I hope to see them again some other time.
- the Wormhole re-vamped their beer selection. Hell yeah.
- I have criminally underrated the drumming in Dreamend.
- <3 u ryan, no homo.
This is a stupid post. Kill me.
