i know that this isn't necessarily a primary destination, especially seeing as it is so far north [aand pretty darn cold between november and march], but if one were to visit here in the summer, there are many food carts at the campus-end of State St. [one of the main streets here, it runs between the college campus and the capitol and houses many fine establishments] that offer very good foods, and i haven't even tried but half of them!
also, if one were to visit in the summer, they have a pretty sweet farmer's market around the capitol, that offers many a good pastry, many vegetables, and, most importantly, lOts of cheese. the hot+spicy cheese bread is a must

i spent a week in madison for a conference a few years ago. i saw the farmers markets, they looked nice. only good place i found in a few tries was the great dane pub. they had some good beer and quite a wide range of good food from what i can remember.

agreed, there is a surprising variety at the great dane, despite its simple pub feel. and this is coming from a vegetarian!
