It's been an unusually active concert season for me. I think 2011 is shaping up to maybe be the best year I've ever had for live music. So far I've seen the following:
Dean and Britta performing the music of Galaxie 500 Joan of Arc Gang of Four
And I've got tickets for these upcoming shows:
Deerhoof (TONIGHT!) Godspeed You! Black Emperor Mogwai ATP Asbury Park (with Portishead and Jeff Mangum!)

Heading to Godspeed in Chicago on the 26th! Just saw If These Trees Could Talk and Gifts From Enola. Fun show, but a little underwhelming. Gifts were the best, although way too loud (yes, I'm one of those audiophile geeks who usually wears earplugs to shows ). Otherwise, thinking of catching S. Carey on March 31st, and have plans to see a few local acts in the next few months.

I just bought my tickets for Sleepytime Gorilla Museum in early April. I haven't seen them before, and when I found out it was their last tour I knew I had to get out and see them. 4 - 5 hour drive should be worth it for them.

E6 Concert Review Time!
So, to start, I want to say that this was the most positive concert I’ve ever been to, I was grinning and happy from start to finish, and the atmosphere had a lot to do with it. When we walked in, just seeing the giant snowman’s smile gave me a warm feeling, and the notion that this was going to be an unforgettable concert. When everyone came onstage after their accapella intro (something about cerebral anomalies, I don’t remember the name of it) it was just pure musical joy mixed with controlled chaos. Although I didn’t know a lot of the songs, they played a lot I did as well which was amazing! For the snowman game, the winner chose a Bad Brains song, which complemented nicely with the Minutemen cover the band played earlier. It was a good night for DC Punk covers. Enlightenment went on for a good 20 minutes or so, with a giant drum circle opening up in the middle of the Church’s floor and Julian whacking everything in sight with a violin bow, including Scott Spillane’s sousaphone. After Enlightenment ended, I got a chance to meet Julian Koster, and I gave him a sticker. Kallie had mentioned giving him a CSA sticker, so I mentioned it to him as well, and he did remember the instance. When I gave him the sticker, he seemed genuinely grateful, and I was so overjoyed to get to meet him. We talked for a little bit about the Music Tapes pillow cases (which I bought) and he told us (Justin, Ian and myself) about how when he sleeps, he uses the same pillow case and when he has trouble sleeping he just thinks of all the people who have the pillow case as well and how he’s about to meet them all in Dreamworld and it helps him sleep better. Afterwards I met Will Cullen Hart who was extremely wound up from the show and couldn’t stop shaking. When we talked, Justin and I mentioned how Black Foilage (the OTC album) was our favorite because we love how on every listen there’s always something new to hear and Will was so happy to hear that. He said “YES! You guys fuckin get it! When it first came out we were worried that no one really got it, but now I’m so happy to know that someone fuckin gets it!” After that, I went to talk to Scott Spillane. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to touch his beard, but he was feeling sick so I didn’t want to bother him too much. We talked for a bit about how I thought it was so cool that they used a Sousaphone because I play Tuba/Sousaphone in my school’s Wind Ensemble and Marching Band, but I’d never seen it used outside of those instances. All in all it was definitely the best concert I’ve been in the audience for, and it was so amazing to get to meet Julian, WIll and Scott.

E6 Concert Review Time!... ...All in all it was definitely the best concert I’ve been in the audience for, and it was so amazing to get to meet Julian, WIll and Scott. Jeff Mangum was chillin in the audience at the show I went to. No one won the snowman game... Brooklyn hipsters can't throw for shit.

I haven't seen them before, and when I found out it was their last tour I knew I had to get out and see them. 4 - 5 hour drive should be worth it for them. You lucky fuck!!! I've seen them three times and the last time I got Nils and Dan to sign my Idiot Flesh LP (super bad-ass shit!) I'm very upset that they're breaking up. You will not be disappointed in the least. They're live shows are far better than they're albums which are already incredibly good to begin with!
